Il tema della memoria è fondamentale in I sommersi e i salvati, l’ultimo libro pubblicato da Primo Levi prima del suo suicidio. The theme of memory is fundamental in The Drowned and the Saved, the last book published by Primo Levi before his suicide. The article investigates this theme by following the distinction proposed by Tzvetan Todorov in an essay between “exemplary memory” or “judicial memory” and “literal memory”, or the memory of the offense received from the deportee and source of his suffering. Starting from the texts written by Levi on his return from the Lager, the essay highlights the various aspects of Levi’s literary memory, comparing it with what he himself wrote in the chapter «The memory of the offense» which opens The Drowned and the Saved. The theme of memory is fundamental in the Turin writer and is also the subject of one of the first stories written on returning from Auschwitz, I mnemagoghi. «The memory of the offense» is therefore the discourse on the method on which the entire building of his latest book rests, so that we can consider it with an image the cellar of The Drowned and the Saved.
